Note: Many Computer Audio Interfaces do not have preamps or inputs for phonos (turntables) or live instruments/mics. Of course you can still record from tape decks, cd players and tuners (radio). Be sure to read the product's information and specifications.

This diagram shows a computer audio interface with audio components and instruments attached to it. The interface's line out connects to the stereo amp's line in and the computer is connected to the stereo system through the tape monitor jacks. The computer is acting as a recording deck. The tape monitor button must be on for the computer to receive the signals from the stereo amp.
The second diagram shows essentially the same thing as above except the line out from the audio interface connects to the computer sound card line in. The sound card line out then plugs into the stereo amplifier.
